The Sampler Show the
Andrew and Laura McCain Art Gallery
Embroidered samplers, originally a means for young girls to learn the letters of the alphabet, numbers, geometric designs, and later, verses, by the eighteenth century were an emblem of a family's wealth, the embroiderer's literacy and her future role as custodian of fine textiles.
Once situated thus they were framed and often became family heirlooms, passed down from one generation to another. Hence, we have them today and have put together a collection of historic New Brunswick samplers, dating back to1775.
Two contemporary New Brunswick textiles artists Janice Wright Cheney and Andrea Butler were invited to revisit the sampler and have created new work for the show.
This show has been organized as part of a series at the gallery celebrating the Year of Craft.
