White Picket Sound Fence
Duncan MacDonald
July 19-August 25
Duncan MacDonald is a contemporary artist originally from Hartland, NB, currently based in St. Catherine’s, Ontario. He works with audio, performance, video, photography, drawing and diverse media to explore the uncanny and the unfamiliar.
This summer he will install a temporary sound-sculpture entitled White picket sound-fence in conjunction with The Andrew and Laura McCain Art Gallery.
Picket fences have many connotations, here the fence itself becomes a symbol of information, the lengths of the slats of the fence represent information, specifically, they represent the population shifts that Florenceville has experienced throughout the past century. The fence will be installed in a public space and passerby will be encouraged to interact with the sculpture by experimenting with the differences in tone made by tapping the individual slats.
MacDonald teaches cultural theory, foundation studio in visual arts, interdisciplinary studio and drawing at Brock University. He holds a BFA in Visual Arts from York University and an MFA in Fine and Media Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. His works have been exhibited, performed and featured throughout Canada, the US, South America and Europe. Recent projects include a residency at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France
